EXAMINING TEXTUAL JOKES AMONG STUDENTS TENSION TOWARD ACADEMIC ASSIGNMENTS

ABSTRACT
Jokes has an essential resource that can be used to transmit concepts, motivate students, encourage creativity especially when dealing with a lot of academic assignments. Therefore it is important to examine the types of jokes used by students in WhatsApp chat. The other focus of this research is to explore the supplementaries of joke used by humorous students in order to assuage students‟ tension toward academic assignments. This paper is based on a research conducted in 2017 at English Graduate Program of State University of Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This research only concentrated on Class C of classroom discussion about their assignments. Through WhatsApp, students expressed their utterances into textual messages, emoticons, phonetic spelling to create verbal effect and eventually creating laughter in process. In this research all the students messages is taken from WhatsApp chat and examined to check the underlying types and also the supporting devices of their jokes. The results show that English students use seven types of jokes (Görlach, 2004) with six supplementaries of jokes (Ritchie, 2004). Findings in this research are relevant in the development of English language learning particularly in attempt to create motivation among their tension.Keywords: types of jokes; jokes supplementary; whatsapp chat; academic assignments; students‟ tension; English courses
